Sllo Talks: Bianca Beers

Bianca Beers has truly taken the world by a storm. Launching her career as an artist, designer and creator in only 2017, Bianca has shared her positive energy and radiant personality across so many mediums (with great success, may we add). Her infectious vibe can be felt both in her work, and through her voice on her social media. So, let’s jump in.

Tell us a bit about yourself and what you do.

First things first, I'm a Sagittarius with a Cancer moon and that truly sums up my personality! I'm loud and extraverted but warm and sensitive :)

In terms of my work, I'm a freelance artist and creator by trade; a bit quirky, a bit colourful and a bit eclectic. I mean that not only with my work, but how I present aesthetically and how I am as a person, too. Mainly I create digital illustrations, do digital design work (think merchandise, packaging, etc.) and create content for brands (otherwise known as "influencing", but I believe I approach the role with a little more integrity and creativity than that title inspires).

What do you feel kickstarted your career as an artist?

Truly it was my ex! He found my old sketch book and encouraged me to pursue a career with it. If it weren't for him I never would have started!! Back then I had very little belief in myself or my abilities, despite my life-long enjoyment and passion for art and creating.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

My inspiration comes from everywhere! But my big 3 are colour, fashion, and flowers - I'm absolutely obsessed with flowers!! They're so absolutely stunning and we honestly take them for granted. I have a whole folder on my phone full of the flower photos I snap on my walks, I get so inspired by their colours and textures and often use them as visual references when creating my digital illustrations.

You are such a talented artist across so many disciplines — what have you learnt from experimenting with such a wide range of interests? This spans not only your physical work but also your work as a social media presence.

Oh thank you, that's so lovely to hear! I think the main thing I've learnt is that people love to pigeon-hole you. As humans we're obsessed with categorising and labelling in order to understand the world around us, which is all good and well until you want to try new things or branch out and experiment! You'll be told to "stick to what your clients/fans/followers know and love you for" - this makes it easier to build a "brand" as well as a following/community and also ensures your social content is more engaging to that community, so I get it. But honestly that gets dry and boring real fast!!!

For me, I do what I want when I want. I've never shied away from a collaboration I was interested in because "what would my followers think" -- which is a torment a lot of my other creative friends have. And I've always been open to trying new mediums or styles in my art, which I think is frowned upon in the industry as people like to be able to recognise a signature style. If we're being honest, I believe this has meant that my growth has been slower than my peers', but on the flip side I've never been regretful or wondered "what if" about anything, and I have faith the right community and clients will always find me in time.

What would be your dream collaboration?

My absolute dream would be collaborating on a sneaker capsule with Nike Jordan!! I have a history in sneakers and I've always wanted to create a dope pair of my own, something utterly wild and limited edition with hidden symbolism and positive messaging. That's the dream and I know it will come true one day!

What do you do to ‘sllo down’?

I'm naturally highly strung, so prioritising relaxation is essential for me otherwise I burnout! So my list is extensive. My favourite things are meditating, reading, having a lovely bath with epsom salts and essential oils, and laying in the sun. I also love going to the beach and going on nature walks, so it's been kinda tough during this lockdown as those things aren't possible. Bring on vaccinated-hot-girl-summer!!
